Glow-worm BBU system - hot water fine - heating intermittent?

Your pump only comes on with heating if it is a four pipe system, as they havn't made glow worm bbu's for years, there is a good chance this is what you have, therefore I would check the pump, check for sludge in the pipework and check for air left in the system when you drained for the valve.
