3 dimensional or 2 dimensional art?

I'm doing a research paper about William Adolphe Bouguereau's "The Nut Gatherers" and I'm having some difficulty understanding the difference between 3 dimensional and 2 dimensional art. Can any one help me with the dimensional art of this specific piece. Thank you =)
