If the bible teaches to dampen our anger, and to seek peace, why are there so many times we are told of Divine?

Wrath and punishment? or are we reading what the persons that wrote into and interpreted from the text of their own anger and want to be the authoritive last word. Just as in modern times the same people delight in telling us we will burn in hell for not paying attention to them and the doctrine they teach. Where is the truth?
