Why do Egg and Sperm Cells have half, haploid, and full, diploid, number of chromosomes?

Egg and sperm cells are haploid which means they have half the total number of chromosomes (23 in the case of human beings). When they unite , they form a zygote with full number i.e. diploid number of chromosomes (46).
