My friend tells me this isn't the right way to cook pasta, is she right?

She's wrong. There's really no need for that much salt, but salt is a good thing to add since it makes a difference in the taste of the noodle. Also - there's absolutely nothing wrong with adding flavorings to the water. Oil might tamper with having a nice dry noodle for sauce to stick to, but it's really a matter of preference.
